Hip replacement surgery is a surgical procedure in which a surgeon removes the damaged or the diseased parts of the hip joint. The structure of the Hip joint is just like a ball and a socket joint. The femur is the top of the thighbone which is attached to a ball component. The ball in the socket allows us to move our leg in all possible directions. A socket is a part of the pelvis. Smooth cartilage which covers the end of the thighbone and pelvis allows smooth movement as it rotates easily in case of a normal hip. While in case of an abnormal hip there is no such thing as a smooth movement as the worn cartilages resist the movement. The damaged Bone becomes uneven and rough as they rub together. and this eventually results in pain. Hip replacement can be performed as a Hemi replacement or as a total replacement ( arthroplasty ). In total hip replacement changing of worn-out socket takes place. The worn-out socket is replaced with a polythene cup or a plastic cup or a ceramic one, with or without a femoral head and a metal shell.
In hip replacement surgery there are various ways to attach the implant to the bone. The implant
is anchored to the bone with the cement in case of a cemented hip replacement whereas in a
non-cemented Hip replacement surgery bone grows on and into the implant surface because of which
fixation occurs.
